Our Story

It all started in Wyoming, Ohio on June 11, 1940.  The name Butterball was first registered as a trademark by Ada Walker. In 1961 she sold the Butterball name to Leo Peters, some say for just $10. Peters worked as a meat processor with Swift and Company in Chicago and later invented the Butterball Turkey while he worked there. Peters licensed the Butterball name to Swift for a decade, before selling the rights to the Butterball Turkey Brand.

Since then, our Butterball Brand has been recognized as one of America’s most iconic brands and the largest producer of turkey products in the U.S.  For more than 80 years, we have been helping families all over, with a mission unchanged, to make delicious, nutritious, and affordable food in a responsible way.
