Job Summary:

The Transportation Planner has logistical responsibility from an order entry into the LeanTMS until that order’s final delivery at the customer location.  This role will be the subject matter expert for the customers, carriers, and logistical movements in their assigned area.  The Transportation Planner will have the responsibility to balance service and cost while achieving internal and external customer satisfaction.   The Transportation Planner will be expected to meet Key Performance Indicators that are established for their assigned area.   To be successful in this role a person must be a self-starter that can operate with limited supervision and be willing to make informed decisions.   A problem solver. 

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for consolidating orders into loads in the most efficient manner
  • Responsible for selecting carriers for loads as directed by Transportation Procurement
  • Responsible for working with Transportation Procurement to tender loads to the best carriers and recovering rejected tenders.Helping to identify gaps in carrier coverage
  • Reduce transportation costs such as out of route miles, detention and layover.
  • Resolve service issues and ensure Butterball carriers are performing to expectations and follow corrective action plans for those that are not.  Proactively identify problems and swiftly work with management to implement the appropriate solution
  • Be the liaison between the transportation department and other internal departments.
  • Work closely with Customer Service on all customer needs and delivery exceptions.
  • Work closely with Supply Planning team to replenish distribution centers in a timely manner but at a low cost.
  • Schedule pickup and delivery appointments to ensure customer expectations are met and optimization plan is followed
  • Can easily navigate within the LeanTMS in order to consolidate orders into loads, answer carrier questions, and communicate with internal and external customers
  • Transportation Planner will insure that all logistical processes are followed in accordance with all the company’s strategies, goals, objectives and procedures while meeting financial goals
  • Will aid in resolution of all OS&D matters
  • Maybe assigned additional tasks by Butterball management

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Must have strong communication skills in emails, phone and personal contacts.
  • Must have a general DOT knowledge
  • Must be able to consolidate orders into loads in the most efficient manner with a balance on cost and service
  • Must have a high sense of urgency
  • Must have a good understanding of the operations of Excel, MS Word and Outlook
  • Must have the skills to pull reports from Excel and or from the Transportation Management System
  • Must speak, read and write in English
  • Ability to work off hours as needed.  This may include nights and weekends

Education and Experience

  • Consumer Goods Transportation decision making experience
  • LeanTMS experience preferred
  • SAP experience preferred
  • Experience being on call and working after hours
  • Bachelor degree preferred with 3 years’ experience working with a TMS and Routing Trucks
  • High School Diploma with 6 years’ experience working with a TMS and Routing Trucks
  • Previous financial and Key Performance accountability
