This position can be based in either Garner or Mount Olive, NC.

Position purpose

The senior transportation planner has full life cycle logistical responsibility for Butterball’s orders, from order entry into the Blujay transportation management system (TMS) through delivery at the customer location. This role provides guidance to a team of transportation coordinators responsible for balancing service and cost while achieving internal and external customer satisfaction. The senior transportation planner will take ownership and be the subject matter expert for the transportation coordintors, customers, carriers, and logistical movements in their assigned area. The senior transportation planner will be expected to meet key performance indicators established for their assigned area.  

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

  • Will oversee and perform complex assignments or projects, as well as review work to assign to staff and assure coverage for all areas.
  • Consolidates orders into loads in the most efficient manner to reduce transportation costs, including out of route miles, detention and layover.
  • Responsible for selecting carriers for loads as directed by transportation procurement. Ensures all loads have an assigned transportation carrier.
  • Answer carrier questions and communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Works with transportation procurement to tender loads to the best carriers and recover rejected tenders, helping to identify gaps in carrier coverage.
  • Resolves service issues and ensures Butterball carriers are performing to expectations and follow corrective action plans for those that are not. 
  • Proactively identifies problems and swiftly works to implement the appropriate solution.
  • Works closely with customer service on all customer needs and delivery exceptions.
  • Works closely with supply planning team to replenish distribution centers in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
  • Schedules pickup and delivery appointments to ensure customer expectations are met and optimization plan is followed.
  • Ensures that all logistical processes are followed in accordance with all the company’s strategies, goal and procedures.
  • Responsible for the resolution of overages, shortages and damages in the assigned area.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and as well an individual contributor to meet individual and departmental goals.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with all levels of team members.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks required.
  • Keen sense of urgency with the ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment and handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work off hours as needed, including nights and weekends.

Education and Experience:

  • This position requires a bachelor’s degree in Logistics/Business or comparable industry experience.
  • 5-7 years prior logistics experience in consolidating orders into loads and managing deliveries.
  • 2-3 years prior experience utilizing a TMS to manage shipments.
  • Knowledge of U.S. geography, transportation costing and the Hours of Service Rules, as it relates to the legal driving time of drivers.
  • Previous experience with financial and key performance accountability.
  • Proficient in MS Office suite (Excel, Word and Outlook).
  • Blujay TMS experience preferred.
  • SAP experience preferred.
