Job Summary:

This person will have overall responsibility of supervising the laboratory.  This includes managing the laboratory technician workload and providing support to make sure internal and external product specifications are achieved/maintained.  Perform standardized qualitative and quantitative tests to determine physical, microbiological or chemical properties of food products.  Assure all regulations & customer regulations are met.   Proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.  Bilingual, Spanish preferred, but not required.   Must be able to work with a cross functional team representing and providing technical expertise in the area of both Chemistry and Microbiology of products.   This team would include Marketing, Sales, R & D, Quality Assurance and Operations.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead laboratory team to meet short and long-term goals.
  • Ensure laboratory technician compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings, including the monthly safety meetings and daily huddle meetings.
  • Evaluate lab technician performance and assist team members’ performance improvement, accountability, and advancement through effective goal setting, feedback, and training.
  • Review and approve Kronos time for lab technicians.
  • Assist with customer facility audits.
  • Assists with developing, implementing and maintaining laboratory programs i.e., Microbiological programs, chemical analysis, product testing, environmental testing.
  • Assists with developing new microbiology and chemical methods and procedures.
  • Monitors inventory of laboratory supplies and submits requisitions as necessary
  • Identify opportunities for improvement, their root causes, and solutions to correct them.
  • Utilize laboratory data to prepare reports, graphs, and charts for members of management and initiate applicable corrective measures.
  • Provide data analysis and trending of data.
  • Issues certificates of analysis
  • Perform microbial, chemical, and physical analysis of food ingredients and finished food samples using established microbiology or chemistry methods and procedure to ensure compliance to standards and specifications.
  • Collect samples in production areas as required.
  • Coordinate with operations, QA, and R&D to ensure samples taken by those groups are collect by or delivered to the lab.
  • Ensure daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly samples for 3rd party lab analysis are collected.
  • Ensure samples of products requiring COA testing are collected and analyzed.
  • Train laboratory personnel.
  • Development of laboratory technicians for further advancements and overall job satisfaction.
  • Conduct facility safety audits.
  • When Laboratory Manager is not available notify appropriate members of management when deviations occur for corrective action.
  • Assists in developing lab technician schedules.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory proficiency testing standards.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory standard procedures manual.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory safety manual.
  • Assist in verification of laboratory training as well as providing training material.
  • Assist Laboratory Manager in maintaining the Listeria monitoring and environmental swabbing program.
  • Assists in maintaining the master site list for environmental testing.
  • Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • May occasionally need to deviate from normal shift to cover special testing.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager or Director of QA.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to learn and understand HACCP principals.
  • Ability to manage time and technical skills.
  • Ability to write reports and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively gather data and recognize trends.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, and dilutions.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry as necessary to perform the duties required.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to prepare standard solutions and reagents for use in chemical and microbial testing and maintain stock of necessary lab materials.
  • Ability to work with cross functional team.
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Food Science, Meat Science, Animal Science or related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience in a food manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience as a lab technician, Microbiologist, Chemist, QA technician or similar function in the Food Manufacturing or Food Testing industry is preferred.

Working Environment:

  • Standard microbiology and chemistry laboratory.
  • Frequent time in cold and wet industrial environment required
  • May require long periods of time on feet
  • May require a lot of walking
  • Must be able to read reports, evaluate data, and use computer.
  • Some long hours and weekend work may be required.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure regular calibration of laboratory equipment, including annual certification, as well as routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Demonstrate competency on all test methods, lab SOP’s and instrument calibrations to a level that is enough to perform all assigned work and to be able to train others.
  • Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • May occasionally need to deviate from normal shift to cover special testing.

Supervisor Responsibility

  • Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the Department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.

Physical Demands

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision includes close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
