This position is responsible for the strategic direction for material procurement for all Butterball operations (including live operations and co-pack relationships) and management of major strategic sourcing project initiatives. Directly accountable for vendor selection, including research, services, pricing and contractual agreements. Provides direct supervision for purchasing managers across the enterprise, and ensures effective systems and controls are in place providing oversight and accountability for expenditures of the Company and optimization of company assets and inventories.

Responsibilities  

  • Oversee the direction of the materials management for the acquisition of direct, indirect and raw materials.
  • Partner with business leaders in the development of overall sourcing and supplier management strategies, ensuring alignment with overall growth strategy.
  • Lead negotiation strategies that will deliver margin improvement and competitive advantage through sourcing reviews, bid activity, cost management and contract negotiation.
  • Collaborate with business partners such as plant management, sales, marketing, research & development team members to provide project support and ensure purchasing and procurement best practices are utilized.
  • Identify, evaluate and problem solve gaps in performance related to all levels of procurement activities to include but not limited to supplier performance, supplier quality, internal order placement performance, buyer activity levels, financial performance, and material shortage elimination.
  • Drive continuous improvement resulting in measurable improvements in KPIs for sourcing, quoting, meeting specs, and on-time delivery.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic sourcing to partner with the business and to continuously improve current processes.
  • Analyze and leverage market data, internal and external expert resources, spend analytics, and cost modeling to drive fact based decision-making.
  • Direct the material bid process including vendor selection, pricing and contractual agreements, ensuring all contractual agreements are executed to meet Butterball requirements and best practices.
  • Manage and mentor the corporate purchasing team, provide direct supervision to the team of corporate purchasing managers and develop key talent.
  • Research and analyze the supply marketplace, maintain working knowledge of cost drivers, product/service pricing, market conditions and identify new and/or alternate sources of supply.
  • Manage material flow to ensure inventory is maintained to the optimum level to support on time customer deliveries while keeping inventory holdings at the appropriate levels.

Qualifications  

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (MBA preferred), and minimum 5-7 years’ relevant purchasing and project management experience.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in the protein industry, particularly knowledge of products, formulation, plant production or R&D experience in the protein industry
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing a team in a dynamic environment.
  • Solid financial skills in the areas of project cost, margin opportunity and ROI.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to build strong partnerships and work collaboratively at all levels within the organization.
  • Supply chain experience in material management
  • Strong team builder with experience leading, managing and developing top talent into future leaders.
  • Strong combination of strategic vision and an ability to get involved on a “hands-on” basis.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with proven ability to improve processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and web-based applications
  • Experience in SAP (preferred)
  • Position may require overnight travel up to approximately 10% of the time.
