Position Summary:

The Director, Corporate Safety, Health and Security is responsible for providing strategic planning and oversight in the areas of safety, health and security for Butterball, LLC.  This position supports and leads the most critical component of The Butterball Way  - Safety First – Safety is Everyone’s Job. The role is responsible for the governance, development and application of policies, programs and processes to ensure the on the job safety, health and well-being of all associates. 

Responsibilities:

  • Strategy: Develops, updates and oversees comprehensive and sustainable occupational safety programs across manufacturing, live animal and fleet operations as well as for corporate support functions. Provides oversight, analysis and recommendations on physical site security.
  • Continuous Improvement: Supports culture of Safety First and continuous improvement of safety performance including in-depth root cause analyses of injuries and near misses, safety advisories, standardized training, and exploration for ability to mitigate risk through engineered solutions.
  • Reporting: Develops, facilitates, and monitors reporting of safety key performance indicators across the organization in both written and verbal formats and manages to established goals including OSHA and DOT metrics. Verbal presentations include to occupational health and safety teams, facility management, senior leadership, and executive leadership.
  • Hazard Assessment / Audit:  Contributes to improvement through regular and constructive site visits and safety audits of all locations.
  • Training:  Supports the development and delivery of standardized best in class curriculums for required and recommended training of all associates.
  • Data Driven Decisions: Uses data from injuries, workers compensation claims, and near misses to identify, advocate and implement safety processes and policies that drive organization towards ZERO injuries. Effectively manages budget to devote resources to areas of highest impact. Use of data analytics to drive performance.
  •  Compliance: Monitors and supports compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local requirements (including codes, regulations, laws) governing safety.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Develops and leads preparation and planning to support regional safety teams for emergencies including severe weather, civil unrest, and other disasters.
  • Leadership: Provides client first services to a large and diverse organization; motivates and engages others through regular presence at locations. Focus on career development of associates in the safety and health organization.
  • Multi-disciplinary Team Role: This role partners closely with plant and live operations teams across the business, and requires skills to be organized, timely and professional in communicating and working cooperatively across the organization.
  • Department:  This role will report to the SVP, General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer as a senior member of the Risk Department working closely with environmental affairs and sustainability, legal and risk management as well as third party administrator and other resources.
  • Performs other relevant job duties as required.

Education/ Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or related fields. Other related on-the-job experience will be considered.

Experience:

  • 15+ years related experience in Occupational Safety.
  • Significant experience leading broad-based safety organization including proven ability to collaborate and lead across functions and business units.
  • Proven track record of reporting and communicating KPI performance.
  • Experience in developing, standardizing and implementing initiatives.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbally with all levels of organization.

Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge of Occupational Safety including OSHA rules/regulations and industry safety. practices. Familiarity with VPP and/or OSHA 18001 a plus.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with occupational safety organizations and benchmarks.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) a plus.
  • Experience with fleet safety, protein processing, live animal and/or poultry operations a plus.
  • CPR / First Aid certified.

  • Ability to travel up to 30%, including some overnight travel, to locations in North Carolina and the Midwest.

Physical Demands:

The majority of the time will be spent in a controlled office environment with frequent use of computer. This position also requires occasional exposure to elements consistent with plant/manufacturing or live operations and the ability to work in cold, wet or hot, dusty environments. In addition, this position requires the ability to occasionally reach with hands and arms, as well as walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, as well as lift, push and pull.
