Job Summary:

This position assists in the management of all engineering projects from conception through completion with emphasis on cost, scope and schedule. Under the direction of the director, engineering projects, the corporate project engineer researches and develops new equipment and processes to improve product quality, production efficiencies, and reduce manufactured costs.The role is specifically project engineering focused on in-plant project coordination and planning activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements methods to improve efficiencies of plant utilities and production processes.
  • Ensures all new equipment and utility installations meet U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements and the company’s strategic plan.
  • Supports the corporate engineering project manager in the planning and design of engineering projects and actively participates on project teams in either a team member or project lead capacity.
  • Performs project management function for assigned projects; insuring project goals, timeframe, and budget are achieved.
  • Develops equipment specifications, source competitive bids, and develop contracts for new equipment.
  • Works with other company departments to test and evaluate new equipment and processes.
  • Lead the development, with the Corporate Purchasing Department, of national contracts for equipment purchases.
  • Ensure best value is received in purchase of materials and labor for all project related work.
  • Provide Engineering leadership at each plant location.
  • Ensure each project meets the governmental requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA), Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Board of Health, and other federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Supports the director, engineering projects and vice president, engineering in any assigned projects and accomplishment of company goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • 2 years’ engineering experience in a manufacturing environment (consumer packed goods) with experience in the food processing industry, strongly preferred.
  • Strong team participation skills and influencing skills are required.
  • Exposure to project management, including cost control, contractor and vendor evaluation and selection, and schedule development and adherence.
  • Must be able to anticipate potential problems and resolve before cost and schedule are impacted.
  • Exposure to OSHA, EPA, BOCA, DEQ and other regulatory agencies governing food processing plants.
  • Basic understanding of statistical process control or total quality management.
  • Ability to create and maintain CAD (Auto Cad experience).
  • Ability to travel up to 50%, if necessary. This includes daily travel to North Carolina plants and periodic overnight travel to Midwest plants, based on project needs. Occasional weekend work and occasional over-weekend travel will be required.
