Position purpose

This role will be responsible for carrier sourcing, negotiation, transportation carrier performance management and development
at the direction of the transportation and procurement manager within the Logistics department at Butterball, LLC.  The carrier sourcing activity is across multiple business units at Butterball. This position will interact directly with many internal and external stakeholders. A natural curiosity drive for continuous improvement, and strong collaboration and problem-solving skills are required.
This position will also provide stakeholders in business units with accurate and market-based freight pricing and ensure that accurate freight rates are loaded in appropriate rating systems. Additionally, the role will build a firm understanding of the refrigerated truck markets within the position's scope of responsibility and use this understanding to communicate market insights, context, and knowledge to stakeholders within Butterball.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Strategic Sourcing

  • Freight sourcing for truckload, LTL and intermodal; develop and manage RFPs and ad hoc sourcing opportunities
  • Execute appropriate RFi, RFP, RFQ and other formal supplier evaluation processes
  • Manage and maintain carrier selection criteria
  • Monitoring of freight markets to identify opportunities for cost improvement
  • Utilize market intelligence to identify opportunities for carrier development and potential cost savings

Contract and Rate Management

  • Lead negotiations for freight agreements to achieve value considering carrier service, cost and performance
  • Ensure commitment compliance among awarded carriers
  • Utilize best practice sourcing, governance, procedures and policies which protect the business and manage risk
  • Maintain carrier database including carrier profiles and routings
  • Manage and maintain rate schedules in the TMS
  • Manage and maintain carrier contracts and insurance

Carrier Development & Management

  • Build strong and positive carrier relationships and find ways to improve processes and/or performance
  • Manage carrier relationships through KPI based scorecard
  • Maintain key carrier relationships to ensure capacity commitments are honored and carrier on-time delivery meets/exceeds expectations
  • Evaluate carrier on time service at the weekly, monthly and quarterly level
  • Evaluate carrier tender acceptance at the weekly, monthly and quarterly level
  • Interact with Operations and Warehouse teams to drive carrier performance and improve cost
  • Work closely with all levels of the transportation and procurement team to establish and update the Butterball routing guide
  • Identify and vet potential carriers for addition to Butterball carrier base
  • Problem solve issues relating to carrier procurement, on-boarding and management
  • Deliver tangible Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that drive improvement within the transportation function with proven results
  • Other duties within logistics as assigned

Education/Knowledge/Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree with concentration in Logistics or Supply Chain Management or related field
  • Knowledge of truckload industry, major carriers, cost drivers, and best practices
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Transportation Procurement and Operations
  • Excellent communications skills (both verbal and written)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders
  • Prior experience with transportation management systems a plus; SAP and BluJay TMS experience preferred
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to use technology to solve business problems
