Job Description

The Transportation Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the logistics of all transportation-related activities for Butterball LLC.   This key role is responsible for the daily execution of transportation operations, ensuring adherence to all policies and procedures while continuously seeking to improve processes and service.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manages daily transportation operations by ensuring that all logistical processes are followed in accordance with all the company’s strategies, goals, and procedures.
  • Lead a team towards attainment and improvement of departmental key performance indicators including but not limited to On-time Delivery, Budgeted Cost, Payload, Capacity, Reverse Logistics and Effective Communication. 
  • Managing reverse logistics, carrier on time pick-up and on time delivery, and unplanned costs in detention both loading and unloading. 
  • Manage full scope of transportation operations to support seasonal spikes during Fresh season(s) in multi-plant locations.
  • Manage rotational schedule for load planning team to provide coverage supporting Butterball business needs including after hours and weekends.
  • Analyze truck weight, cube, pallets, and cost per pound utilizing daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
  • Identify trends and opportunities for improvement through utilization of weekly metrics and reporting on KPIs and Carrier Compliance.
  • Work closely with Procurement team and leadership to drive carrier performance, to include on-time delivery, cost per pound, tender acceptance, routing guide compliance, recovering rejected tenders, identifying gaps in coverage and carrier scorecard.
  • Collaborate with other support groups to resolve issues and plan upcoming shipping needs.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and as well an individual contributor to meet individual and departmental goals.
  • exceptional leadership skills and understand the importance of maintaining the highest standards of customer service.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with all levels of team members.
  • extensive knowledge of transportation management systems and have excellent analytical skills, Critical thinking skills and knowledge of analytics.     
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation (USDOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and transportation regulations.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks required.
  • Keen sense of urgency with the ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment and handle multiple tasks. 
  • Knowledge of SAP, Transportation Management Systems (TMS), Procurement software is preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook) Analytical capacities to problem solve through data gathering, develop solutions, socialize solutions, execute change, and measure the results.

Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business/logistics preferred, or at least 5 years of industry experience in lieu of
  • 3-5 years prior logistics experience managing transportation operations.
  • 2-3 years prior experience utilizing a TMS to manage shipments preferred.
  • Knowledge of U.S. geography, transportation costing and the Hours-of-Service Rules, as it relates to the legal driving time of drivers.
  • Previous experience with financial and key performance accountability.
  • Refrigerated carrier, intermodal, 3PL experience preferred.2+ years of direct people leadership experience.
