Position Summary

This role will spend time working cross functionally with marketing, operations, R&D, and innovation. The successful candidate will work with these teams designing, developing, and testing a variety of packaging for new products. They will lead cross-functional project based teams to identify and research different types of materials and improve techniques used to package Butterball products while ensuring that all packaging conforms to the specifications set forth by quality assurance and meets or exceed corporate goals for food safety, brand appearance and cost reduction.

Responsibilities

  • In accordance with LEAN and Six Sigma principles, identify areas of waste and process improvement to influence and implement change.
  • Drive overall efficiencies and cost savings as related to packaging by collaborating cross-functionally throughout the organization.
  • Improve current packaging systems to improve cost, efficiency and quality.
  • Participate in new product development activities as the packaging SME; analyze data and current market trends to improve customer and consumer experience.
  • Research, evaluate and implement new packaging, mechanical products, equipment and systems (package and equipment).
  • Test, analyze and make recommendations on new materials based on cost, durability, quality, customer feedback and consumer demand.
  • Make recommendations based on technical and analytical data while working with internal teams to investigate and resolve defective packaging.
  • Test and ensure packaging performance.
  • Develop and update written packaging material specifications.
  • Review and approve product specifications.
  • Work with and audit operations and vendors for conformance to requirements.
  • Approve suppliers and items for strategic sourcing events.
  • Provide templates for marketing for all new package design.
  • Provide support in all areas of packaging for engineering, operations, sales, marketing, quality assurance and research and development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in packaging science or engineering
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in food or consumer packaged goods, including experience specifically around new and innovative packaging and products.
  • Solid understanding of packaging materials, package/product systems, packaging equipment, and packaging performance testing protocols.
  • Working knowledge of CAD or other packaging graphics design programs.
  • Understanding of ingredient functionality and interrelationship of ingredients, process, and packaging.
  • Solid planning and project management abilities couple with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to interact and collaborate with R&D groups, external resources, suppliers and consultants to achieve project objectives.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks concurrently with the ability to question the priority of work.
  • Working knowledge of Six Sigma/Lean tools.
