Job Summary: 

The Manager, Transportation and Procurement is a highly visible and critical role reporting to the Director of Logistics. This position ensures goods are shipped and delivered to the right place, at the right time at the right cost. Through thorough understanding of Butterball's Transportation network and our TMS this position will be responsible for data analytics, cost savings, vendor relationship management, people development, compliance, and most importantly will drive change through industry best practices, analytics, and experience. This Manager of Transportation and Procurement will lead Butterball transportation employees spread across multiple geographic areas and must have strong leadership, motivational, and demonstrated people leadership experience.  

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure that shipments into or out of the organization are planned and executed quickly, safely and within constraints of the budget and TMS.
  • Superior analytical skills to solve real time transportation problems with solutions that meet the needs of Butterball as well as the customer.
  • Liaison between Customer Service, Plant Operations, Sales and Supply Chain.
  • Oversight of transportation personnel within Butterball and external service providers.
  • Familiarity with shipment options, legal issues, and government regulations is required.
  • Knowledge of Geography, routing, TMS, WMS, Yard Management, SAP and other computer applications.
  • Ensure customer opportunities are researched and recommend improvement solutions.
  • Manage supplier relationships for capacity and high levels of consistent service.
  • Conduct business cadence meetings with suppliers and improve results of on time delivery, tender acceptance, correct billing, and real time visibility of shipment status.
  • Drive optimization in routing that reduces cost, improves service and visibility.
  • Work closely with Warehousing and Procurement that optimizes overall logistics objectives.
  • Evaluate cost/service tradeoffs and provide solution alternatives to customers and sales.
  • Conduct analysis that improve service or lowers cost.
  • Manage data flow into and out of the TMS.
  • Audit unloading and detention charges for cost improvement and carrier improvement
  • Develop strategy to drive transportation pricing, service and capacity management.
  • Drive process improvement, savings and service enhancements for logistics.
  • Manage carrier contracts, pricing, negotiations and relationships.
  • Meet with current and prospective carriers to discuss service, contract terms and conditions, and price negotiations.
  • Create and review weekly metrics and reporting on KPIs and Carrier Compliance. Identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Implement changes for improvement.
  • Review corporate financials and provide input for supply chain and logistics costs.
  • Review third party expenses to ensure compliance and identify cost saving opportunities.
  • Formulate and lead the execution of the strategy to handle the seasonal surge business and ecommerce.
  • Conduct facility and carrier visits as necessary.
  • Identify process improvements and map out implementation plans.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of DOT and transportation regulations.
  • Knowledge of TMS, WMS and SAP
  • Analytical capacities to problem solve through data gathering, develop solutions, socialize solutions, execute change and measure the results.
  • Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Engineering or similar field.
  • 8+ years of experience in Logistics, Transportation, Manufacturing Operations, or similar field
  • 2+ years of direct People Leadership Experience
  • Transportation operations experience for a manufacturer or shipper of food products.
  • Demonstrated TMS experience
  • Demonstrated communication, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Refrigerated carrier, intermodal, 3PL experience.
