Lab Specialist

Position Purpose

The Lab Specialist position performs in a dual role as a Flock Serviceperson and Lab Specialist. In the Flock Serviceperson role, the Lab Specialist provides supervision and support for assigned contract turkey growers; provides good husbandry practice for assigned farms; and continually strives to provide the best quality/least cost production according to Butterball’s guidelines and requirements. Concurrently, the Lab Specialist provides laboratory knowledge and support to evaluate and interpret turkey health conditions in order to guide management and treatment decisions.  

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

  •      Informs and advises the Live Operations Manager of status and performance of flocks

  •      Maintains accurate records of flock mortality, performance, and medications

  •      Determines most efficient means of producing high quality and least cost turkeys on contract grower farms

  •      Diagnoses and treat diseases of turkeys in accordance with guidelines set forth by Veterinarian and Live Operations Manager

  •      Maintains constant contact with contract growers in order to address concerns and policies

  •      Reviews and explains all flock settlements with contract growers and identifies opportunities for improvement

  •      Implements and evaluates field projects as assigned

  •      Participates in the Service Department's weekly production meetings

  •      Assists in projecting weekly performance estimates and cost savings projects

  •      Understands the processes, diseases, and medications of live turkey operations

  •      Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  •      Possesses and utilizes computer skills to communicate and input and analyze data including use of spreadsheets and word processing

  •      Maintains flexibility in daily schedule to coordinate laboratory time with other live operations employees submitting samples to the lab

  •      Records all laboratory submissions and findings with formal case reports

  •      Completes necropsy of turkeys and interprets normal and abnormal findings

  •      Properly collects, stores, and submits diagnostic samples from laboratory cases

  •      Performs gross and microscopic intestinal health analysis for the diagnosis and monitoring of enteritis

  •      Communicates laboratory findings to flock service representative(s), management, and veterinarian as appropriate

  •      Packages and ships all diagnostic samples to proper external labs based on veterinarian’s protocols

  •      Maintains equipment and supplies at the Huntsville live operations laboratory

  •      Assists in various special projects for live operations as needed

    Qualifications

  •      Bachelor degree in Animal Science, Poultry Science, Biology, or related field (or equivalent training and experience)

  •      2 years of relevant experience

  •      Interest in turkey health and desires to develop advanced microscopy skills

  •      Previous microscope or laboratory experience preferred
