Job Description

The Director of Insights is responsible for directing protein thought leadership, helping Butterball increase brand value through consumer and patron insights via primary/secondary research, consumption, shipment, syndicated (including point of sale and household panel) data.  As a leader within our Marketing function, they will provide strategic counsel using interpreted insights to support strategy development and decision making across the entire organization.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, execute, and present/socialize throughout the organization all custom quantitative and qualitative consumer research such as consumer segmentation, concept testing, sensory, brand tracking, etc.
  • Evaluate and recommend syndicated data sources to deliver marketing’s goals.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and direct resources for and application of international insights
  • Provide leadership and overview of consumption, shipment, e-comm, and other syndicated data results to find opportunities, threats, and support decision making.
  • Direct the assistance of the Sales leadership, Team Leaders, Brokers, and Business Development Managers in the account planning process, including merchandising recommendations, item addition/deletion recommendations, volume estimates, and other traditional category management tasks
  • Direct all market research initiatives across consumer, shopper, patron, customer, sales, brand, industry trends and other significant data.
  • Support new product concept efforts to help find meaningfully unique ideas and qualify them with target consumers and customers.
  • Direct Business to Business tracking for Butterball LLC
  • Direct development of effective fact-based and persuasive sales presentations and category reviews. This includes partnering on sales calls with key accounts and enabling open dialog to enhance problem solving
  • Comprehensively analyze and strategically apply learnings from all insights sources to support brand communications and media decisions
  • Oversee measurement of marketing plan effectiveness: program tracking, sales impact and application to future programs to improve them.
  • Ensure respective budgets are managed properly.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strategic & critical thinking. Strategic thinking skills to identify and counsel the strategic plan for the retail division. This requires advanced abilities to measure Butterball’s advantaged and differentiated position in the marketplace versus key competitors to define a strategy of sustainable growth for the division. Needs to have the experience to apply the strategy to action with a thorough understanding of the retail environment and the proven ability to turn intelligence into actionable and winning strategies.   Advanced problem solving is required including expert analytical analysis skills and the ability to condense complex business issues into concise recommendations to drive action.
  • Financial acumen & analytics. Extensive experience with financial analysis. Ability to analyze data (experience with IRI/Nielsen, Household Panel, ShopperSights preferred) to draw conclusions and make recommendations. Strong Excel skills are required.
  • Presentation skills. Advanced skills in building presentations appropriate for sharing and influencing internal audiences up to and including the CEO and external audiences like strategic brand partners and customers (e.g., Walmart, Kroger) Strong PowerPoint skills are required.
  • Consumer research. Extensive experience building consumer research projects and a familiarity with consumer research methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative. Will have the ability to combine consumer intelligence from multiple sources and turn them into clear conclusions and recommendations to drive best decisions for the department.
  • Influence and advocacy. Superior abilities to advocate strategies through the organization, achieving buy-in necessary to get full organizational support.
  • Team leadership. Experience leading teams of direct reports to achieve successful business outcomes while developing team members’ talents to their highest potential.
  • Project leadership. Extensive project leadership experience with an emphasis on cross-functional teamwork. Will need to show previous examples of his/her project leadership in action to create real organizational change and business improvement.
  • Budget management. Budget ownership experience, seeing that each investment is sound and that budgets are not exceeded.
  • Consumer goods experience. Experience with consumer goods trade practices and performance spending. Retail grocery knowledge preferred.

Education & Experience: 

  • Undergraduate business degree required. MBA preferred.
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience required.
