Job Description

The Buyer is responsible for carrier sourcing, negotiation, and related projects.  Liaison with stakeholders in business units to provide accurate and market-based freight pricing and ensure that accurate freight rates are loaded in appropriate rating systems. The role requires a firm understanding of the refrigerated truck markets within the scope of responsibility and use this understanding to communicate market insights, context, and knowledge to stakeholders.  The Buyer employs advanced critical thinking in the development and evaluation of the more complex requests for proposals for commodities and services.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Champion the development and execution of the Transportation Sourcing Strategy and Carrier Procurement and Compliance
  • Develop a working relationship with numerous suppliers, performing excellent vendor management throughout the RFI, RFP, RFQ process.
  • Analyze bid compliance by appraising actual results versus the response provided in the bid
  • Analyze and Report on transportation costs, delivery performance, carrier quality, and trends
  • Evaluate carrier on time service and tender acceptance at weekly, monthly and quarterly levels
  • Execute and measure carrier performance score cards; service, capacity and cost
  • Maintain carrier database, including carrier profiles and rates, and administer carrier compliance policies
  • Assist in the development of competent, productive and effective carrier relationships and find ways to improve processes and performance
  • Expand the range and improve the expertise in TL Transportation by providing external research, benchmarking, and analyzing cost drivers
  • Minimize liability by reviewing and identifying available capacity for difficult lanes and recommend carriers
  • Assist in the efforts to confirm committed capacity, negotiate carrier contracts and rates
  • Deliver tangible Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that drive improvement within the transportation function with proven results
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the business

  • Provide continuity of management, supervision, and leadership within Transportation by assuming duties and responsibilities as designated by the business

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Detailed knowledge of development and execution of Transportation Carrier Operations (financial, equipment, mode, driver issues, geographical radius)
  • Customer and Commercial knowledge- Detailed knowledge of truckload industry, major carriers, cost drivers, and best practices
  • Ability to multitask, prioritizing and organizing assignments to make efficient use of time with significant attention to detail
  • Cross functional collaboration- Ability to build strong, collaborative relationships and develop data-driven strategic solutions to business needs
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to changing roles and tasks within a dynamic department
  • Data-driven decision maker- Possess the attitude and determination to stay focused on results and deadlines until the task or project is completed
  • Strong and Relevant Risk Management experience using RMIS
  • Knowledgeable in Contract Management/Negotiation
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills related to transportation carriers, rate negotiations and cost analysis
  • Strong oral/written communication skills to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and external customers
  • Strong Process Improvement and Project Management knowledge

Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain Management, Procurement, or Business Management
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years freight procurement experience combined with 5 to 10 years procurement experience
  • Minimum experience managing $50+ M in spend.
  • Cold Chain Experience 3 to 5 years preferred
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience and knowledge of Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and ERP system required. BluJay & SAP preferred
